Why I Chose IONOS

After evaluating several providers, including OVH and Contabo, IONOS stood out for one reason above all others... support. Before committing to a VPS contract, I did enough research to know that technical issues will happen eventually, and the difference between a frustrating experience and a smooth one often comes down to who picks up the phone. IONOS's reputation for responsive, knowledgeable support was a decisive factor, and after several months on the platform, that reputation proved to be well-earned.

The Plan: VPS M

The VPS M sits in the mid-range tier of the IONOS lineup. My configuration:

2 vCores

4 GB RAM

120 GB NVMe SSD

For a general-purpose Linux server handling web applications and moderate traffic, this allocation has held up well. No performance degradation, no unexpected throttling, no surprise resource contention. The NVMe storage in particular makes a noticeable difference compared to spinning-disk or standard SSD tiers on competing providers.

Performance

Day-to-day server performance has been consistently strong. The system responds fast, processes stay within expected resource bounds, and disk I/O has been reliable across sustained workloads. There have been no unplanned outages or degraded periods worth reporting in the time I have been running the server.

Compared to OVH at a similar price point, the IONOS hardware feels more consistent, OVH can be excellent value, but resource consistency varies more by region and tier. Contabo arguably offers more raw resources per dollar, but raw specs only matter if the underlying infrastructure is stable, and IONOS has delivered on that front.

Support: The Standout Feature

This is where IONOS genuinely separates itself from the competition, and it is the main reason I would recommend them to someone who values peace of mind.

Email support typically produced a response within minutes, not hours, not "within one business day." Actual minutes. The responses were substantive and addressed the specific question asked rather than redirecting to documentation.

Phone support was equally strong. Wait times were short, and the agents were technically capable rather than script-readers.

To put this in direct context: I have used OVH for a previous project, and their support turnaround was significantly slower. For infrastructure that you rely on, slow support is a real operational risk. IONOS eliminates that risk.

Pricing and Contract Terms: Read Before You Sign

This is the one area where some buyers get caught off guard, not because IONOS does anything deceptive, but because the contract structure deserves careful reading.

When signing up through a promotional contract, the discounted rate does not necessarily apply for the full contract duration. The introductory pricing covers a portion of the term, after which the rate adjusts. When the contract ends and you renew, the renewal price is higher than the promotional rate you initially signed up at.

I went into this fully aware of the structure, so it was not a surprise. But if you take the headline promotional price at face value and assume it locks in for the entire contract period, you may get an unwelcome bill later. The advice, read the pricing schedule on the order page carefully before confirming.

The pricing is still competitive for what you get, particularly when factoring in the quality of support. Just go in with accurate expectations.

The 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee: Tested and Honored

Shortly after signing up, I accidentally added a service I did not intend to purchase. I contacted IONOS, explained the mistake, and received a full refund immediately. No pushback, no drawn-out process, no escalation required.

That kind of straightforward handling builds genuine trust. A lot of providers advertise a satisfaction guarantee but make the actual refund process cumbersome. IONOS did not.

Control Panel: The One Weak Point

The IONOS control panel, specifically the cloud/server management interface, has a noticeable performance problem. Navigating between sections, configuring firewall rules, and making infrastructure changes involves loading delays and occasionally sluggish response times that feel disproportionate for a modern web interface.

This was annoying enough to mention, though its practical impact is limited. Initial server configuration takes more time than it should, but once the server is set up, most day-to-day interaction happens via SSH rather than the web portal. It is a frustration that fades after the initial setup phase rather than one that affects ongoing operations.

How IONOS Compares

OVH is still the cheapest option for raw compute at scale, and Contabo consistently offers more resources per dollar than most competitors. But support responsiveness has a real monetary value, especially for small teams or solo operators who cannot afford extended downtime waiting for a ticket queue to clear.

My Conclusion

IONOS VPS M is a solid choice for anyone who prioritizes reliable support over squeezing the maximum specs out of every dollar spent. The hardware performs consistently, the 30-day guarantee is honored without friction, and the support team is genuinely one of the best I have dealt with across multiple hosting providers.

The contract pricing structure needs attention before signing, not because it is unfair, but because the promotional rate does not persist for the full term, and renewal pricing is higher. Read the pricing breakdown on the order page before confirming.

If raw value for money is the primary criterion and you are comfortable handling support delays, OVH or Contabo may better fit your budget. If you want dependable infrastructure backed by support that actually responds, IONOS earns the higher price.
